Drawing is about understanding both.
Here’s a finished artwork of African animals that I created by hand.
It shows how their bodies have form, volume and weight, and how they occupy space.
But this stage is where the drawing really started.
Before any detail is considered, we need to capture the scale, form and volume of the subjects.
Once those main forms are established in space and perspective, they can be developed into recognisable animals by adding the details that make them what they are.
And this is what lies beneath the finished drawing, before colour, highlights and finishing touches are added.

Once you understand how something is constructed you can draw it from observation, memory or imagination.
